Graduate Program of the School of Medicine "IMMUNOLOGY: BASIC PRINCIPLES AND CLINICAL APPLICATIONS"

During the first and second semesters of the Postgraduate Studies Program "Immunology: Basic Principles and Clinical Applications" a series of lectures, seminars and labs with mandatory attendance will take place. During the third semester, candidates will prepare their thesis under the supervision of a faculty member in the role of "academic mentor", with the main goal of cultivating basic skills in laboratory and clinical methods of research and teaching. The performances in written and oral exams are evaluated by a 3-member committee of the MSc. The subject of the thesis is determined in accordance with the regulations of the MSc, according to which, the subject, supervisor and three-member evaluation committee of the thesis are determined. The candidate is required to present the thesis within one (1) year from the completion of the second semester of the MSc.
Subject area of the course
The subject area of the Postgraduate Studies Program "Immunology: Basic Principles and Clinical Applications" is directly related to the core of the Undergraduate Study Program of the Medical Department and all Health Sciences, given the involvement of immune mechanisms in pathogenesis of a wide range of Internal Pathology diseases. Specifically, the subject of Immunology is taught both within the pre-clinical and clinical courses of the School of Medicine, including Physiology, Pathological Physiology, Biology, Microbiology and Internal Pathology.
The provision of accreditive, interdisciplinary and modern scientific knowledge together with the development of clinical and laboratory skills during the MSc program "Immunology: Basic Principles and Clinical Applications", ensures all the necessary and complementary knowledge, which are absolutely related to the content of the courses of undergraduate studies in Medicine and other health sciences and is compatible with all courses and medical specialties and specializations in the School of Medicine.
Coordination
This Postgraduate Studies Program is led and delivered by renowned and leading researchers and university professors, who have extensive international teaching and clinical experience in the field of "Immunology: Basic Principles and Clinical Applications".
The coordinators of the MSc are: Clio Mavragani (Professor of Physiology / Clinical Physiology), Stavroula Giannouli (Associate Professor of Pathology-Hematology), Maria Eleftheria Evagelopoulou (Associate Professor of Neurology - Neurochemistry), Themis Alisafi (Assistant Professor of Biology), Panagiotis Tsirigotis (Professor of Hematology - NKUA), all members of the Faculty of Medicine of NKUA.
Further objectives
The MSc Program "Immunology: Basic Principles and Clinical Applications", aims to become a point of reference for postgraduate studies in health sciences and particularly in the field of immunology, by providing a holistic and interdisciplinary education as well as valuable laboratory and clinical skills of graduate in relates sciences.
Particularly, the MSc objectives are:
A) To relay to students the understanding of basic functioning mechanisms of the immune system and its applications as well as to familiarise them with the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspect of disorders related to the immune system.
B) To present the principles of basic and clinical research, applied to in health sciences.
C) To train students how to process, analyse and present the results produced during the preparation of their thesis as well as how to author scientific papers and create posters, based on the above results.
D) Familiarise students with modern educational methods (how to prepare and present a scientific lecture, write reviews, participate in seminars and conferences with oral presentations) with the aim of preparing MSc students for future teaching in the subject of Immunology (Basic Principles and Clinical Applications) in various educational Institutions of all levels.
E) To cultivate skills with hands-on training, depending on the specialization of choice, in order to perform the newest techniques and research protocols in the field of Immunology.
The postgraduate students will be evaluated at each stage of the program via oral and/or written examination (multiple choice questions) and the preparation of their thesis.
